Contemporary is the style of the current time. From today’s point of view, contemporary design and architecture pulls from the functional roots of midcentury modern design while using variations in textures and colors. Currently, contemporary design is seeing a slight departure from the straight lines of the minimalist movement while adopting curvilinear shapes. Contemporary design today also blurs the lines between surfaces such as walls, tables, and floors.
Craftsman style homes incorporate functionality and simplicity. This is typically executed by the layering of simple materials to form variations in shape and depth. This design style reflects on the beauty of a more complex shape created by simpler shapes. The design is very linear in nature and utilizes functional features.
Industrial design reclaims objects for repurposing. There is a level of raw savagery to this style that makes people want to reconnect to their roots. You can’t help but get pulled in by the character of a brick wall in an old industrial building. Since homes are typically places to live and industrial buildings are made for labor, industrial style is emulated through furnishings and wall finishes. This style boasts a lot of steel, wood, and brick. The finishes are simple and functional.
Eclectic combines various types of textures and colors from different time periods. This design style often embodies the designer’s eye for detail. Putting together the perfect arrangement of diverse color and textures to create a visually balanced room is difficult, but when done correctly the final product can evoke a wider range of feelings than any other style of design.
Midcentury modern boasts bold functional design that connects the space with nature. Similar to Craftsman, industrial, and contemporary themes, this style uses simple brick, concrete, and geometric stone surfaces. Typically homes like this boast lots of glass and natural light. Exposed rafters and clean linear design can also help the modest eye catch this design style.
Minimalist design is very true to its name. Like many of the other modernist design styles, minimalism appears simplistic but is really embodied by the multifunctionality of architectural features. The goal is to allow the space to be functional yet reduce the number of items that create visual clutter. This results in emphasis on the matting of surfaces and negative spaces. In this style, the elements have more prominence; they must be pristine, with simple colors and clean lighting.
Victorian is a style of excess that utilizes patterning of ornate objects like crown molding and detailed wood finishes. This should give the feel of a hand carved piece of art. As an affordable adaptation of Gothic design, don’t assume Victorian style is a consistent theme of curved shapes. Instead, expect to see ornate designs on otherwise linear objects.
Often seen as a close subset of Craftsman design, coastal design uses specific colors and décor that fit the coastal beach environment. The colors are typically white washed or ocean inspired, and the space is expansive and uses natural light. Shapes and lines are often simple, and the layering of those shapes is only moderately involved in comparison to other styles.
Similar to cottage and Tudor styles popular today, cabin designs build warmth through color and lighting. This style feels cozy yet rugged and employs an abundance of natural stones and wood. The functional nature often lends to the exposure of major structural components.
